An Oxygen Concentrator is very safe to use in the right conditions. However, if you do not maintain your oxygen concentrator correctly it can be dangerous. Here is a step by step guide to maintaining your oxygen concentrator:

1. Make sure you keep the oxygen container upright and secured. It can be very heavy and cause damage if knocked over. Also it is possible for the cylinder valve on the concentrator to get knocked which could cause high pressure oxygen to push out of the valve and cause the cylinder to move about the room in a destructive, uncontrolled manner.
2. Turn off the oxygen system when it is not being used.
3. Keep oxygen cylinders and oxygen tubing at least ten feet away from any heat source, this includes candles, fireplaces, gas stoves, or hot water heaters, heaters, large windows. Also do not store in an enclosed place, like a car boot or a hot vehicle. Allow plenty of ventilation.
4. Do not allow smoking anywhere near the oxygen concentrator. Post 'no smoking' signs in the room where the equipment is kept or used.
5. Never grease or oil your oxygen equipment. In certain conditions the combination of oxygen, oil-based toiletries and a spark from an electrical appliance can cause a reaction and create a fire or explosion.
6. Keep equipment away from all flammable materials such as oil, grease, aerosols, paints, gasoline and solvents. Do not use petroleum jelly with oxygen; use a water-based product instead. Do not use anything flammable including cleaning fluid, gasoline, paint thinner, aerosols, or alcohol-containing sprays. 
7. Do not use electric razors, hair dryers, or any electrical appliance that has a motor while you are wearing your oxygen.
8. If you hear a hissing sound coming from your tank, or if it empties too fast, it could be oxygen leaking from the container. If this happens, stay away from the container and open windows to clear out the additional oxygen in the air. Call your maintenance company or supplier straight away.
9. Do not hide the oxygen tubes under furniture, carpets, bed covers etc. They need to be in clear sight so that people do not trip over them accidentally. Not only can this damage the person that trips as well as the patient, it can also damage and create kinks in the tube and prevent the oxygen flowing correctly.
10. Make sure your oxygen concentrator is serviced and maintained by a reputable company on a regular basis.
11. Wipe your cylinder and any equipment with a clean, damp cloth. Never use wax, cleaning sprays or polish.
