Transform Your Bathroom: Easy Upgrades for Senior Safety and Independence

Bathrooms can be dangerous places for nearly everyone, as there are hard surfaces that are sometimes wet or slippery due to soap. So imagine navigating that as someone senior or disabled. The numbers show that there are over 235,000 emergency visits yearly, just from the bathroom. (CDC)

I have personally done two-person transfers into a shower for clients who are paraplegic or do not have full mobility, and it can be super stressful to the client and the caregiver who doesn't want to injure the client or themselves.

Bathroom safety is important to help your senior or disabled loved ones as independent as long as possible.

So what can you do to help lower these numbers and keep your loved one safe?

These are some simple and inexpensive items you can acquire to help keep everyone safe.

1. Grab Bars

Grab bars: These are installed near the toilet, tub, and shower to provide support when getting in and out. They come in various lengths, styles, and finishes to match your bathroom decor.

2. Bath Bench

A bath bench: These provide a stable seat for showering or bathing, reducing the risk of slips and falls. Look for chairs with slip-resistant rubber tips and backs for added support.

3. Raised Toilet Seat

Raised toilet seat: This elevates the toilet seat, making it easier to sit down and stand up. Choose one with a secure fit and grab bars for additional assistance.

4. Bath Mat

Non-slip bath mat: This helps prevent slips and falls on the wet bathroom floor. Choose a secure, non-skid backing mat and a textured surface for better traction.

5. Shower Chair

The shower chair's primary function is to offer a secure and stable place to sit while showering or bathing. This can help prevent slips and falls, common in the slippery bathroom environment, especially for seniors or individuals with mobility limitations.

Remember, consulting with a healthcare professional or occupational therapist is essential to identify the specific needs of a senior and recommend the most suitable bathroom accessories for their situation.
